Heart K Ranch

Conserving a Historic Ranch

The Sierra Nevada is known throughout the world for its rugged beauty, recreational opportunities, extensive forests and crystal-clear lakes and streams. Some of California’s richest natural and cultural assets are found in the northern region of the Sierra Nevada. The Heart K Ranch in Genesee Valley is one of these Sierra treasures with its scenic intermountain beauty and rich historical past.

Connecting People to Nature

The Heart K Ranch encompasses 884 acres of California black oak and interior live oak woodlands, old growth pine forests, riparian woodlands, and montane meadow habitats. The property provides important wintering and breeding habitat for the Sloat Mule Deer herd and is home to river otters, black bear, beaver, mountain lions, golden eagles, bank swallows, northern goshawks, 6 native fish species, and a variety of other wildlife species (26 special status wildlife species in all). The 2.5 miles of Indian Creek flowing through the middle of the ranch includes extensive willow and cottonwood riparian habitat. Being immediately adjacent to the Plumas National Forest, the Heart K Ranch is an ideal recreation site for hiking, canoeing, fishing, horseback riding, cross country skiing, and bird watching.

This area is of great importance to the local Mountain Maidu and
continues to provide a valuable gathering site for Maidu families
today. From the local Maidu to the settlers that followed, the
productive bottomlands and forests have provided the resources
for a self-sufficient lifestyle, thus creating a long history of people’s
connection to this land.

Heart K at Risk

Paying off the Heart K property loan will prevent it from being sold off whole or in parcels to private buyers. In all likelihood, private ownership of the Heart K would prevent riparian restoration and public access to the property. Complete Land Trust ownership will allow FRLT to move forward on stream restoration, invasive species control, forestry and carbon management, water dedication, public recreation, and the protection of its’ cultural and historical significance.

Our Vision for Protection

Upon purchase of the Heart K Ranch, the Feather River Land Trust will work to improve and enhance public recreation, decrease the risk of fire, protect crucial habitat for fish and wildlife, increase watershed restoration, and encourage greater use of the historic ranch house. FRLT will continue to lease the Ranch to local cattle ranchers while exploring the possibility of establishing a small market garden. Both activities will contribute to local food production, local economic growth, and the continuance of family-owned business. FRLT also plans to work with the local Maidu community to protect and enhance existing cultural resources. The Heart K Ranch will also be used to demonstrate several water and carbon-based ecosystem service projects.
